Have you ever wondered why a certain type of food or food habits have different effects on you and someone close to you? Have you ever wondered why you swear by coffee to get you through the day and your friend cannot hold down even a sip of coffee? Have you noticed how much your food habits have changed over the course of your life?
If you have pondered over any of these questions then this article might have answers for you. (if you haven’t then share it with someone you think has in fact pondered over these questions.) In this blog we will understand the concept of healthy self through the lens of humanistic psychology and nutrition.
Psychologist Carl Rogers states that to live a “good life”, one must first understand that life is a process and not a constant or fixed state of being. He explains that in order to experience the good life one must remain flexible and open to life’s ebbs and flows. He asserts that the “healthy self concept” is not a fixed identity, it is rather a fluid and changing entity that is open to possibilities. This self concept he says consists of our perception and beliefs of ourselves and is also affected by our childhood and societal effects. In order to create a healthy self concept he says we must work towards “self-actualization” or aligning our ideal self and actual self.
According to Rogers, the ideal self represents the person we aspire to become a version of ourselves that embodies our fullest potential. It encompasses our values, beliefs, and goals. By aligning our actual self (who we currently are) with our ideal self, we can experience a sense of congruence and fulfillment. It can be noted here that our actual self is highly influenced by our sense of self-worth and self image. So in order to achieve self-actualization, we should also work on our sense of self-worth and self image along with aligning our actual self and ideal self.
Now, let’s examine how we can apply Rogers’ theory to the realm of nutrition and health. Our physical well-being is deeply intertwined with our psychological state, and by nurturing both aspects, we can strive for a harmonious and balanced life.
Identifying Your Ideal Self:
Reflect on your vision of an ideal self in terms of nutrition and health. What habits, behaviors, and characteristics would this ideal self possess? Consider aspects like a balanced diet, regular exercise, emotional well-being, and self-care practices. Take some time to write down your thoughts and create a clear image of your ideal self.
Assessing Your Current State:
Now, evaluate your current state regarding nutrition and health. Are your current habits and behaviors aligned with your ideal self? Identify areas where you may be deviating from your desired path and acknowledge any discrepancies. This self-awareness will serve as a foundation for growth and change.
Embracing a Compassionate Approach:
Rogers emphasized the importance of an approach where individuals are encouraged to take an active role in their own personal growth. Apply this approach to your journey towards optimal nutrition and health. Be kind to yourself, practice self-compassion, and make choices that resonate with your values and aspirations.
Setting Realistic Goals:
Break down your ideal self into smaller, attainable goals. By setting realistic targets, you can progress steadily and experience a sense of achievement along the way. For example, if your ideal self includes a balanced diet, set a goal to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your meals each day.
Cultivating Self-Reflection:
Regularly reflect on your progress and experiences. Journaling can be a powerful tool for self-reflection. Document your thoughts, emotions, and observations regarding your nutrition and health journey. This practice will help you stay connected with your inner self and make adjustments as needed.
Overcoming Challenges and Seeking Support:
Embarking on a journey towards your ideal self is not without its challenges. There may be obstacles, setbacks, and moments of self-doubt. However, remember that growth is a continuous process, and setbacks are opportunities for learning and improvement.
Building a Support System:
Reach out to friends, family, or professionals who can support you on your nutrition and health journey. Surround yourself with individuals who uplift and motivate you, and who share similar aspirations. Their encouragement and guidance can make a significant difference.
Seeking Professional Help:
If you encounter difficulties or need expert guidance, consider consulting a nutritionist, therapist, or health coach. These professionals can provide personalized advice, help you navigate challenges, and offer valuable insights based on their expertise.
